Home schooling is a method of learning which allows the student to undertake courses required for the grade level without need for the student to go to school everyday. This allows for more flexibility for the student as to scheduling and provides a more stable environment for learning. This is not an easy task though as there are requirements that need be complied with in order that the schooling would be accredited by the school board. Here are the following requirements for a valid home schooling course.

1. Have a program.

A home school system needs a program of study to be duly approved by the accrediting school. This outlines the particular subjects that would be tackled by the student. Also, the supervising adult must be duly accredited by the school as competent to fulfill the requirements of the program, either as an accredited teacher or learning partner. Then, this program once duly approved shall be the backbone that would guide the home student and the learning partner in their quest for knowledge.

2. Submit to a schedule.

In the program are the number of days allowed for a home student to undertake the study and to understand the concepts of the subject matter. After the provided number of days, the student must be able to answer the course competency exam. But before that, each lesson per day provides for an exercise to be undertaken to buttress the learning of the student. Then for every lesson there is a chapter review. Each step corresponds to a set of days in the schedule for the learning to be consistent and constant. This is critical for if a student fails to comply with the allotted days then there would be time lost for the other chapters of the lesson which would impact the over all learning process. A steady pace and even hand is thus needed to complete the required program.

3. Take tests.

Like regular school, there are learning check ups that are given to see if there is retention of the knowledge learned and a determination of the level and expertise of the student over the subject matter. This is done through end of chapter tests and the end of term tests which are provided to the student throughout the duration of the program. These tests then are collated and their scores are reviewed to determine if the student has met the minimum requirements to earn the course units. These tests also determine achievement level and areas of improvement for the study plan of the individual home student.

The freedom to be home schooled is not absolute. This must still be under the direction of the school district to ensure the quality of education given to home schoolers. Thus a program and its implementors must be accredited, a schedule must be arranged and tests need to be given to determine the competency and reliability of the system. In the end, the learning passed on would be part of a better and brighter mind.
