Eight Steps To Effective Studying

Good grades can be achieved by developing studying skills. Unfortunately, the techniques are not taught in school so we end up studying inefficiently. Here are some tips that may help you improve your studying skills and help you get good grades:

1. Try "behavior modification." Research shows that studying in the same place at the same time for a specific subject conditions the mind to automatically react in that subject mood. For instance, if you are used to study science in garden every morning, your mind will automatically set your mood to that environment. This will help you focus on your lessons at hand. You can also reward yourself after studying like watching a movie or playing basketball because according to studies, giving positive reinforcement to a certain behavior actually encourages you to study more.

2. Take a break after a few hours of studying. Experts say that you can study effectively if you take a break for 10 minutes for every hour of studying. It helps you refresh your mind and through that, you are actually rewarding yourself for studying well. If the lesson you are studying requires memorization, it is advisable to spend 30 minutes at most. Your mind requires time to absorb all information that it has been getting. That is the reason why cramming for an exam does not work too well.

3. Try to re-arrange the study schedule for each of your lessons. Study first those lessons which are hard and difficult or those subjects which you do not like. Then work your way down to your favorite subject. This way, you will have more time to focus on your difficult subjects and when the time has come to study on your favorite subject, you still have the enthusiasm to work on it rather than other way around.

4. Re-organize your subjects to be studied. Subjects which are more or less the same in nature should be separated. This will help you stay in focus because you will not be bored of having the same subject over a period of time. After studying math, you may want to study English or history instead of Physics.

5. Study when you are adequately rested. When people are tired or sleepy, they could not focus their attention to what they are studying. There are certain times of the day when you are tired or sleepy. In these cases, instead of studying, do some organizing on your study table or do some recreation.

6. Different classes in school have different preparation requirements. If the class requires student participation like recitation, it is better to study the lessons beforehand. However, if the class requires long lectures, you can study after the class by organizing and reviewing your notes.

7. Use some memorization techniques. Studies reveal that it is not very wise to memorize notes just by reading them again and again. This will take more time to do and it is not an effective way to retain information in your brain. The best way is to visualize the items and if possible, to do so with sound. You can say it loud and listen to it at the same time or you can simply associate it with something that will relate it to. This will be easier to recall.

8. Organize note taking. Organizing your notes makes studying quite easy. The use of color pencils or highlighting items that are considered important in your notes will help you remember what you have written easily. Jot down all examples that your teacher has provided you during class, as this will help you remember how your teacher did it when you review your notes later. At times, teachers can run out of time during classes so they sometimes do some cramping up of all the remaining items in a short time. Though often neglected by other students in their hurry to go out of the classroom, it is important to listen well and write down what has been discussed.
